Useful links to good online resources
Studieskolen and the Copenhagen Main Library collaborate on several areas. The library provides access to many e-resources that can be of interest and help to Studieskolen’s students.
We’ve pulled together a list of Useful Links to the online resources available for English language students.
Dictionaries
Oxford English Dictionary (access for Copenhagen municipality residents via the library)
Simply put: The DICTIONARY. Complete with explanations, examples, etymology and citations. Updated periodically.
Oxford Reference Online (access for Copenhagen municipality residents via the library)
An online reference site that contains more than 100 reference works, including a variety of English language dictionaries.
Gyldendal’s Red Dictionaries online (access for Copenhagen municipality residents via the library)
An online version of Gyldendal’s red dictionaries, Gyldendal’s large red dictionaries and selected specialized dictionaries, including technical, legal and medical dictionaries.
Wordsmyth
An American English dictionary with lots of functionality. Provides related words, both with regards to meaning and spelling. Use this resource if you are unable to use any of the preceding ones.
Grammar
Online English Grammar Resources
Concise English grammar resource that reviews the parts of speech from adjectives to verbs, including examples. Good quizzes and tests. Also includes a list with links to language courses and tests.
Language Courses
English for everyone
A good site with lots of approaches to learning English: free online courses, dictionaries, etc. And the best feature: the ability to search for reading and listening materials at different levels and covering different subjects. This site is designed for a number of Danish libraries. TRY IT!
Q Oxford English Online (access via the library)
Courses from Q Oxford English Online cover all levels, from basic to master, and also include some situation-specific business courses. Start by finding your level using Placement. The courses are interactive and there are both written and oral exercises. We highly recommend this resource.
Before you can take a course, you need to register with the site provider.
TalkNow (access via the library)
A good beginner’s course available in 100 languages, including Danish. The course can be found on the site Games and Media (Spil og Medier), where you can download it to your computer and use it for 7 days.
BBC Learning English
Not designed for beginners, but contains lots of good texts, listening quizzes, tests and radio programs. The main focus is English as a foreign language.
My Language Exchange
Not so much an actual course, but more of an exchange site, where two or more persons with different mother tongues practice each other’s language. For example, a Danish-speaking person learning English could exchange with an English-speaking person learning Danish. Exchanges take place via email, chat or live conversation.
My Language Exchange helps language students find each other.
News in English
Library PressDisplay (access for Copenhagen municipality residents via the library)
Access to app. 1200 current newspapers from 70 countries, more than 400 of which are in English. You can even read the day’s paper prior to the print edition being published.
About the English-speaking countries
Europa World Plus (access for Copenhagen municipality residents via the library)
Current information about most countries in the world, including history, geography, economics, politics, education, statistics and the media.
Please note: The phrase (access via the library) besides an e-resource means that you must reside in the Copenhagen municipality, or another municipality that provides access to that e-resource, and be registered as a borrower at the local library, to use the resource.
